Concussion Rehab.

Recovery Plan.

Recovering from a concussion can be an incredibly overwhelming process. These days it seems like there is an endless stream of information and opinions for this type of injury, but not enough hands-on help! Should you sit in a dark room? Should you completely rest and not look at any screens? Should you venture outdoors? We understand your frustration, and your fears. We love educating our patients, and believe that education is the first step to recovery after concussion.

Our Physiotherapists use current, evidence based practices to guide you through your recovery. We help you to regain your confidence while transitioning back to your life, whether you are an athlete, a couch potato, or anything in between.

What is a concussion.

Contrary to popular belief, a concussion by definition does not involve structural damage to the brain. It’s actually a biochemical imbalance within the brain cells, that causes concussion symptoms. The biochemical changes result in decreased blood flow and temporary energy deficits within the brain.

Symptoms of a concussion can include: loss of consciousness, headache, pressure in the head, neck pain, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, or balance problems, among others.

Baseline Testing.

The first, and by far the most important step in properly managing concussions comes before the injury happens. Actually, before the season even starts! A “baseline test” is a test that is done BEFORE a concussion happens.

The purpose of a baseline test is to measure every area of brain function which could become affected following a concussion. This way, if an athlete does get a concussion, we can compare their post-injury state to their baseline test to help make an accurate diagnosis, and ensure a safe return to play.

Concussion Rehab.

A concussion is considered an energy deficit, complete with ion imbalances and blood flow abnormalities. The stages of recovery help to safely move you from a state of injury, back to living your life with confidence.

Concussion recovery is a very individual experience. Our Physiotherapists are trained to help you move from one stage in recovery to the next while explaining this process and what to expect.
